Free Seminar to Teach Golfers How to Putt Like a Pro
Local Psychotherapist Advocates Mental Preparation for
Peak Performance on the Green

RIVER EDGE, N.J., May 7, 2012 – Dr. Jay Granat, Ph.D., who has been named one of America’s “Top Mental Gurus” by Golf Digest Magazine, will host a free putting seminar for area golfers on Monday, May 14, at his River Edge office. A psychotherapist and the founder of www.StayInTheZone.com, Granat will walk golfers through his four-step method for improving their game on the green.

Attendees of the seminar will learn Granat’s CARE method of putting: Confidence, Accuracy, Relaxation and Enjoyment.

“While it may sound easy to train your mind to be relaxed, confident, focused and in a pleasant state of mind on the green, many golfers simply can’t get themselves into this ideal performance state when they’re competing,” says Granat.

“Putting is very mental,” adds Granat, who has worked with touring pros, PGA players, high school players and college golfers. “Most of the pros who come to see me for counseling are struggling with putting, tempo or their short game.

“Choking on short putts and missing putts to win wagers and tournaments frustrates golfers at every level. Mastering the mental part of putting can have a big impact on your score and on your handicap.”

Granat, author of How To Putt In The Zone With Sport Psychology And Self-Hypnosis, says there are four mental skills that golfers of all levels need to master to improve their performance on the green. “That’s the basis of the CARE method.”

During the 90-minute seminar, Granat will explain and demonstrate how this putting method can help lower your score. He will also show golfers how to utilize “mental cross training” to improve performance on the green, in the fairway and off the tee.

The seminar will begin at 7 p.m. at Granat’s office, 1060 Main Street, Suite 307, in River Edge, N.J. High handicappers and single-digit handicappers are welcome. Reservations are required as space is limited. To reserve a spot, call Granat’s office at 201 342-3663.

Sports Psychology Tip: How To Build Self-Confidence And Focus

April 11th, 2012

New research with 160 elite athletes reveals ten peak performance tips.

How do world class athletes get themselves ready to perform their best when the pressure is really on?
What are some of the strategies, tools and techniques they use to tune out distractions, stay focused and remain self-confident when faced with a serious challenge?
My team of researchers and I recently interviewed approximately one hundred and sixty elite athletes from a wide range of individual sports and team sports including: golf, tennis, mixed martial arts, wrestling, track and field, football, soccer, gymnastics, swimming, lacrosse, diving, hockey, baseball, figure skating, fencing, boxing, gymnastics, field hockey, lacrosse, basketball and judo.
The people we spoke to compete at the professional level, the Olympic level, the college level and the high school level.
We asked them about choking during competition, managing pressure and the strategies and techniques they used to perform to their fullest potential. Several themes and patterns seem to be mentioned very frequently.
First, for many athletes, the zone is synonymous with the idea of focus. Focus can be thought of as relaxed concentration where you are absorbed in the task and living in the present.
Second, a lot of the athletes reported listening to music prior to a game, match or performance. Many had very specific songs which seem to “psych” them up to compete.
Third, a lot of the athletes visualization, guided imagery, meditation, guided imagery or self-hypnosis to get their mind into the right gear for winning. Many would imagine a perfect performance in great and vivid detail.
Fourth, relationships with teammates and coaches were a key component to their athletic success. The great athletes seem to have outstanding relationships with the key people in their lives. Conversely, conflicted relationships can create much stress on and off the field for the serious athlete.
Fifth, many athletes reported using the same routines and rituals in their training for many years. Some had developed these routines when they were young competitors.
Sixth, passion for their sport keeps them motivated and excited. Passion pushes athletes to train hard and stay focused when the pressure is on.
Seventh, losses and setbacks are viewed as bumps in the road and learning experiences to grow and to improve from. I learned quite a bit about managing peaks and valleys from a rather surprising source.

Eighth, having fun is paramount. When an athlete is no longer having fun, he or she may be suffering from burn out. It is very hard for an athlete to perform his or her best when one’s sport is not appealing or fun.
Ninth, a great performance can be thought of as a function of hard work and talent minus distractions.
Tenth, choking is the opposite of being in the zone. When an athlete chokes he or she is distracted and they lose focus. Knowing how to manage choking and setbacks are essential skills for peak performers . The athletes we spoke to learn how to activate their inner warriors when they need to get mentally tougher when faced with an athletic challenge.
Many of these mental toughness techniques can be applied to work challenges and to academic challenges that we are apt to face in life.

Seven Reasons Why Tim Tebow Will Help The New York Jets-By Dr. Jay P. Granat

March 27th, 2012

Fans, sports radio hosts and pundits are in an uproar over The Jets’ signing of Tim
Tebow.
The idea to bring Tim Tebow to New York has gotten an incredible amount of media
attention. In fact, more than two hundred reporters attended his press conference on
Monday.
A lot of fans and writers seem to dislike the idea of Tim Tebow playing for the gang
in green. A lot of people don’t like the idea of two quarterback system. They point to
other instances where having two quarterbacks has not worked out well for other NFL
squads.
Some people say he is bad at reading defenses and he has an orthodox and inefficient
throwing motion.
However, I think Tim Tebow can have a positive impact on the team. Here’s why.
First, he is an excellent athlete who is very competitive.
Second, if the coaching staff can design the right kind of plays, he can create some
confusion for opposing defenses. Imagine Tebow lining up in the backfield or out wide
as receiver. There are a lot of offensive possibilities with Tim on the field.
He could be very hard to defend and he could present problems for some opponents.
Third, he can be a real threat in the red zone. He may take some pressure off
off of Mark Sanchez.
Fourth, Tebow is a solid citizen and a very likable kind of athlete. It is possible
that he can have a positive impact on the unstable Jet’s locker room.
Fifth, while Denver did not do very well in the playoffs, Tim Tebow has a
history of being able to find ways to win games. His winner’s personality is a valuable
asset.
Sixth, Tebow’s spirituality, while controversial to some fans,
may help to inspire some of his teammates.
Seventh, and perhaps most important, is this point. Do you think Tebow’s
presence can help the Jets to win two more games than they did last year?
If you do, that means the Jets can be a team with ten wins. This is usually enough
wins to make it into the playoffs.
So, Jets fans should welcome “Tim Terrific” to the New York area with open arms
and open minds.
